Ingredients

Scale

Sloppy Joe Mixture

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ cup yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Assembly

  • 13.5 ounces Five Cheese Texas Toast, 8 slices
  • 8 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded (preferably freshly shredded)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (218°C) and line a large rimmed baking tray with parchment paper. Set aside for later use.
  2. Brown the ground beef: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef for 4 to 5 minutes until no pink remains, breaking it apart as it cooks for even browning.
  3. Drain excess fat: Use a slotted spoon to transfer the cooked ground beef onto a plate, then drain the excess fat from the skillet to prepare for sautéing the onions.
  4. Sauté onions: Add unsalted butter and finely chopped onions to the same skillet. Cook over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes until the onions become soft and translucent, releasing their sweetness.
  5. Create the sloppy joe sauce: Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, white vinegar, yellow mustard, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Add the reserved cooked ground beef back to the skillet and mix everything well.
  6. Simmer the mixture: Bring the sauce mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer gently for 7 to 8 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the beef nicely.
  7. Bake the Texas Toast: Place the frozen Five Cheese Texas Toast slices onto the prepared baking tray with the cheese side facing up. Bake in the preheated oven for 6 minutes until starting to get golden and crispy.
  8. Top the toast: Remove the baking tray from the oven and evenly distribute a little less than ½ cup of the sloppy joe mixture onto each Texas Toast slice.
  9. Add shredded mozzarella: Top each sloppy joe-covered toast with about ¼ cup of shredded mozzarella cheese, gently mounding it in the center so it melts evenly over the filling without spilling over.
  10. Finish baking: Return the baking tray to the oven and bake for an additional 3 to 4 minutes, until the toast is fully crisped and the mozzarella cheese melts beautifully.

Notes

  • For best melting results, shred your own mozzarella from a block rather than using pre-shredded cheese which often contains preservatives that inhibit melting.
  • You can customize the sloppy joe mixture spice level by adjusting the amount of mustard and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Serve immediately while the toast is warm and the cheese is gooey for the best flavor and texture experience.
