Perfect for a summer gathering or any time you want a uniquely colorful and flavorful drink, garnished with lime and a spicy Tajin rim for an extra zing.

Ingredients

Scale

Hibiscus Syrup

  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup dried hibiscus flowers

Hibiscus Tequila Cocktail

  • 1/2 cup Tequila Reposado (recommend Centenario)
  • 6 tbsp hibiscus syrup
  • 6 tbsp fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • 2 tbsp Tajin seasoning or kosher sea salt, coarse ground
  • Lime slices, for garnish
  • Optional: leftover steeped hibiscus flowers from syrup

Instructions

  1. Prepare Hibiscus Syrup: In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, and 1/2 cup dried hibiscus flowers. Bring the mixture to a boil while stirring to dissolve the sugar. Reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes until the syrup is infused with the floral flavor. Remove from heat and strain out the flowers, reserving the syrup to cool.
  2. Rim the Glass: Moisten the edge of your serving glasses with a lime slice and dip them into the Tajin seasoning or coarse kosher sea salt to coat the rim evenly. Set aside.
  3. Mix the Cocktail: In a shaker or mixing glass, combine 1/2 cup Tequila Reposado, 6 tablespoons hibiscus syrup, and 6 tablespoons fresh lime juice. Add ice and shake or stir until well chilled.
  4. Serve: Strain the mixture into the prepared glasses filled with fresh ice. Garnish with lime slices and, if desired, a few of the leftover steeped hibiscus flowers for a beautiful finishing touch.

Notes

  • Use Centenario or a quality Tequila Reposado for best flavor.
  • Hibiscus syrup can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • Tajin seasoning provides a spicy, tangy rim; alternatively, use coarse kosher salt for a simpler taste.
  • Adjust the syrup and lime juice quantities to taste for sweetness or tartness.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, substitute tequila with sparkling water or a mild tea.
