Ingredients

Scale

Red (Heart) Batter

  • 15.2 ounces box of red velvet cake mix
  • 3 large eggs
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 3 ounces vanilla pudding mix (one packet)
  • 1 cup sour cream

Green Batter

  • 15.2 ounces box of yellow cake mix
  • 3 large eggs
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 6 ounces pistachio pudding mix (two 3-ounce packets)
  • 1 cup sour cream

Icing

  • 1½ cups white icing
  • ¼ cup green icing
  • 2 tablespoons red heart sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Prepare Red Batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the red velvet cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, water, vanilla pudding mix, and sour cream. Mix thoroughly until the batter is smooth and evenly blended.
  2. Prepare Green Batter: In a separate bowl, combine the yellow cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, water, pistachio pudding mix, and sour cream. Mix until the batter is well combined and smooth.
  3. Bake the Red Heart Layer: Pour the red batter into a greased heart-shaped cake pan or a round pan lined with a heart-shaped template. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for approximately 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool completely.
  4. Assemble Green Cake: Grease a larger cake pan which will hold the green batter surrounding the red heart. Pour the green batter into this pan, then carefully place the cooled red heart cake in the center, pressing slightly to embed it within the green batter.
  5. Bake Assembled Cake: Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the green cake portion comes out clean. Remove from oven and let cool completely.
  6. Apply Icing: Once the cake is fully cooled, spread the white icing evenly over the cake surface. Use green icing to add decorative touches or swirls as desired. Finish by sprinkling red heart sprinkles on top for festive decoration.

Notes

  • Ensure both cake layers are completely cooled before assembling to prevent batter mixing and melting.
  • The green batter includes pistachio pudding for a rich flavor but can be substituted with vanilla pudding if pistachio is unavailable.
  • Heart-shaped pans or templates help achieve the iconic red heart shape inside the green cake.
  • This cake pairs well with a cup of coffee or tea for holiday gatherings.
  • Leftover cake can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
