Indulge in a delicious and gluten-free twist on the classic Croque Madame. This recipe features layers of gluten-free ham, Gruyère cheese, and a creamy béchamel sauce, all sandwiched between buttery gluten-free bread slices and topped with a fried egg.

For the Sandwich:

  • 8 slices gluten-free bread
  • 8 tbsp unsalted butter (softened)
  • 12 slices gluten-free ham (e.g., Boar’s Head)
  • 2 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or a suitable gluten-free alternative)
  • 4 large eggs
  • Fresh chives (chopped for garnish)
  • Microgreens (for serving (optional))
  • Freshly cracked black pepper (for serving)

For the Gluten-Free Béchamel Sauce:

  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 1⁄2 tbsp gluten-free all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tbsp gluten-free Dijon mustard
  • 1⁄2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1⁄8 tsp ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Béchamel Sauce: In a saucepan, melt butter, add flour, and whisk until golden. Gradually whisk in milk, mustard, salt, and nutmeg until thickened. Set aside.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich: Spread butter on bread slices. Layer ham, Gruyère, and béchamel. Top with another bread slice.
  3. Cook the Sandwich: In a skillet, fry sandwiches until golden on both sides. Remove and keep warm.
  4. Fry the Eggs: In the same skillet, fry eggs to desired doneness.
  5. Assemble Croque Madame: Place a fried egg on each sandwich. Garnish with chives, microgreens, and cracked pepper.
