Slider Ingredients
- 15 ounces (12-count) package of slider buns (Martin’s brand Potato Rolls)
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided (4 tablespoons and 2 tablespoons)
- 3 cups thinly sliced yellow onion (from 1 large onion)
- 3 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves, divided (2 teaspoons and 1 teaspoon)
- 2 teaspoons grated garlic (from 2 cloves), divided in half
- ½ teaspoon granulated sugar
- ¾ teaspoon salt, divided (½ teaspoon and ¼ teaspoon)
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1½ pounds thinly sliced deli roast beef, cut into 1-inch wide strips
- ½ pound Swiss cheese, thinly sliced
Au Jus Dipping Sauce
- 10.5 ounces can Campbell’s French onion soup
- 1½ cups water
- 1 ounce packet Au Jus mix
- Prepare the caramelized onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Add the thinly sliced yellow onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they soften and begin to caramelize, about 15-20 minutes. Stir in 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves, 1 teaspoon grated garlic, ½ teaspoon granulated sugar, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon black pepper. Continue cooking for an additional 5 minutes until onions are deeply browned and flavorful. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Prepare the slider buns: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the slider buns horizontally, keeping the entire top and bottom halves intact. Place the bottom halves in a baking dish.
- Assemble the sliders: Evenly layer the sliced roast beef over the bottom halves of the buns. Sprinkle the caramelized onions on top of the beef, then add the Swiss cheese slices over the onions. Cover with the top halves of the buns.
- Make the butter topping: In a small bowl, mix the remaining 2 tablespoons of melted butter with 1 teaspoon of fresh thyme leaves and 1 teaspoon grated garlic. Brush this mixture generously over the tops of the slider buns to add flavor and help achieve a golden crust during baking.
- Bake the sliders: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and bake an additional 5 minutes until the cheese is melted and the tops are golden and slightly crispy.
- Prepare the Au Jus dipping sauce: In a saucepan, combine the Campbell’s French onion soup, water, and the 1-ounce packet of Au Jus mix. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until warmed through.
- Serve: Serve the sliders hot with a side of the warm Au Jus sauce for dipping. Encourage dipping each slider to enjoy the classic French Dip flavor.
Notes
- Use good quality deli roast beef for the best flavor and tenderness.
- Caramelizing the onions slowly adds a deep, rich sweetness that complements the savory beef and cheese.
- Martin’s Potato Rolls are recommended for their soft texture and slight sweetness, which balances the savory filling.
- The Au Jus sauce can be made ahead and reheated when ready to serve.
- For a milder onion flavor, use fewer garlic cloves or omit fresh garlic in the butter topping.
- Sliders can be assembled ahead of time and refrigerated before baking, just add a few extra minutes to the baking time if baking cold sliders.
