Ingredients

Scale

Chai Latte

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup milk (or a plant-based alternative)
  • 1 black tea bag or 1 tsp black tea leaves
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • a pinch of ground black pepper

Whipped Cream

  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 tsp of the spice mix (see instructions below)
  • 1 tsp honey

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Spice Mix: In a small bowl, combine the ground cinnamon, ground cloves, ground ginger, ground cardamom, ground nutmeg, and a pinch of ground black pepper. Mix these thoroughly to create your chai spice blend.
  2. Brew the Tea: In a small saucepan, bring the 1/2 cup water to a boil. Once boiling, add the black tea bag or black tea leaves. Reduce heat and let it steep for about 3-5 minutes until the tea is strong and aromatic.
  3. Add Spices and Sweetener: Remove the tea bag or strain the tea leaves. Stir in the prepared chai spice mix and brown sugar while the tea is still hot, ensuring the sugar dissolves completely and the spices infuse into the tea.
  4. Add Milk: Pour in the 1/2 cup of milk or plant-based alternative. Heat the mixture gently on low heat until warmed through, but do not let it boil to avoid curdling. Stir occasionally for an even blend.
  5. Prepare the Whipped Cream: In a chilled bowl, combine 1/4 cup heavy cream with 1/4 teaspoon of the chai spice mix and 1 teaspoon honey. Whip using a hand mixer or whisk until soft peaks form and the cream holds shape.
  6. Assemble the Latte: Pour the hot spiced chai latte into a mug. Spoon or pipe the spiced whipped cream on top generously.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Optionally, sprinkle a tiny pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg on the whipped cream for garnish. Serve immediately while warm and enjoy your festive Christmas Chai Latte.

Notes

  • You can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less brown sugar or honey according to your preference.
  • Use dairy or any plant-based milk (almond, oat, soy) as per dietary needs.
  • For a stronger chai flavor, steep the tea and spices longer but be careful not to over-brew and cause bitterness.
  • The whipped cream can be made ahead and kept chilled until ready to use.
  • Add a cinnamon stick or star anise to the brewing step for extra aroma if desired.
