The Blackberry Tequila Sage Smash is a refreshing cocktail combining the delightful flavors of ripe blackberries, aromatic fresh sage, and zesty lime, perfectly balanced with tequila and a splash of lime-flavored seltzer. This drink features a homemade blackberry sage simple syrup that adds a natural sweetness and herbal depth, making it ideal for summer gatherings or a calming evening treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Blackberry Sage Simple Syrup

  • ½ cup turbinado cane sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 7 ripe blackberries
  • 3 large fresh sage leaves

Cocktail

  • 3 ripe blackberries
  • Crushed ice (as needed)
  • 1 ounce Blackberry Sage Simple Syrup
  • 2 ounces tequila
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Lime flavored seltzer (to top off)
  • Extra lime wedges (for garnish)
  • Extra blackberries (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Make the Blackberry Sage Simple Syrup: In a small saucepan, combine ½ cup turbinado cane sugar, ½ cup water, 7 ripe blackberries, and 3 large fresh sage leaves. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar fully dissolves. Let it simmer gently for 5 minutes to infuse the flavors, then remove from heat and let it cool completely. Strain out solids before use.
  2. Muddle Blackberries: In a cocktail shaker or sturdy glass, add 3 ripe blackberries and gently muddle them to release their juices but not completely pulverize.
  3. Add Ingredients: Add 1 ounce of the prepared Blackberry Sage Simple Syrup, 2 ounces tequila, and the juice of 1 lime to the muddled berries.
  4. Add Ice and Shake: Fill the shaker with crushed ice, then shake vigorously for about 15 seconds to chill and blend the flavors.
  5. Serve: Strain the mixture into a glass filled with crushed ice.
  6. Top with Seltzer: Finish the cocktail by topping off with lime flavored seltzer to your preference.
  7. Garnish: Garnish with extra lime wedges and ripe blackberries for a visually appealing presentation and added flavor.

Notes

  • Use fresh, ripe blackberries for the best flavor and sweetness.
  • The simple syrup can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • Adjust sweetness by adding more or less simple syrup based on your taste preference.
  • For a less alcoholic version, reduce the tequila and increase the lime seltzer.
  • Crushed ice is preferred for a colder, more refreshing cocktail experience.
